The age of the mother was probably 73 and the son’s age was 43. The grief-stricken story begins when the son gets exasperate because his mother was not keeping well for few weeks. He could not leave her alone and go out to spend time with his friends and hence he decided to keep his mother in an old age home. One day deliberately without asking his mother whether she wants to go he packed her bags and took her to the old age home. After dropping her, the son was about to leave, when his eye stopped at a man who was talking to his mother. He asked the man about the conversation when he told that one day someone had left a baby boy mourning at the doorstep of this old age home when a lady(the mother) came and took him to her dwelling place. The boy was stunned and realized immediately that the lady was his mother and he was the child she picked from
the door. He caught sight of his mother and gave her a tight hug of warmth and took her back with him. This deployable story put my eyes in tears and forced me to think upon this mournful truth of mankind!
It leads to the birth of few questions in my mind: Do we need NGOs? Can’t we even take care of our parents who put their sweat and blood so that we could live a good life? Are we so selfish? And most importantly Do we portray the same example for the upcoming generation? What was the situation that leads to the invention of the NGO? The first NGO was globally started by an Anti-slavery society in 1839 and proved to be a catalyst for
many other organizations. The term “NGO” gained its existence at the end of the second world war.
In India, Geeta Dharmarajan was the first woman to start an NGO at Katha to give educational rights to deprived students. It has also started KITES(Katha information technology and E-commerce school). The work of this organization is impeccable. Although all of these organizations are non-profitable they work keeping their nose to the grindstone.
An old age home is the only option that can take care of and look after the senior people?… The answer is a NO! An old age home can only take care of those people but they cannot provide the love, affection, and a sense of belongingness of a son/daughter or grandchildren. Instead, staying at one’s own house with his loved ones helps him to cure emotionally as well as mentally. It is that age when one needs to understand each other and that will sum up to an affirmative result. The NGOs are not only confined to old age homes but also with orphanage homes and special needs home. An orphan goes through a lot of stumbling blocks due to ill-treatment by society. Society never
considers the orphan one of them. They try to isolate and deprive him/her of learning opportunities, health care facilities, and other amenities. The orphanage home is like angels in their life as they don’t remove them from these opportunities and they also provide aid to make them emotionally strong.
For special children, special need homes act as their savior and also serve them. As it is every child is special, we should always try to treat everyone as one. Few special need homes such as Danita, praytn, and prathmesh work for this cause exemplarily. In California, there is a concept of a “group home’’ where 4-5 people live together as they need the same level of care. The main objective of these homes is to keep people with disabilities
safe, healthy, and in good medical condition. This NGO’s not only serving for old age homes, orphanage house, special needs home, etc but also play their part in aiding sustainable development, human rights, promoting education as well as
empowerment of women. They played an irrefutable role in sustainable development not only at the national but also at the international level.
The Non-government organizations participate in various fundraising competitions that would help them to fulfill their goals. Work for the betterment of society, public welfare, and minimization of poverty are some of their yet-to attain aspiring objectives. These non-profitable institutions are partially or not financed by the government or other organizations. They exempt from government control and voyage towards excellence in their work. NGOs do also play a significant role in our lives ,they are the torchbearers and flag holders of our society. They believe that no one in this world is alone or alienated from opportunities that common people have.
As responsible citizens and good humans, we should always try to exceed mankind and not isolate people from a common lifestyle. Rather we should always support them and take them along towards a world where better and benevolent human beings live.
