Mother is not just a word but means a lot and is a sign of humanity, motherhood, caring, sharing, sacrifice and devotion. A Mother is only the one who cares about her child and bears the pain. To recognize and appreciate Mother’s care and sacrifice, Mother’s Day is celebrated throughout the world. It is a day to honour mother and motherhood, to share her pain, to care about her, and to let her know how special she is!

HISTORY :
Honouring Mother’s and motherhood can be traced back to many and many years. Honouring goddesses was also a part of it. In India, Durga Puja is still celebrated to honour the mother figure, Goddess Durga. Greek and Romans also celebrated this day and held festivals to honour, Goddess Cybele ( Mother of Wild Nature ) and Goddess Rhea ( Great Mother of Gods ). Anna Maria Jarvis of the United States originated and founded Mother’s Day. Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States, made it a national holiday.

IMPORTANCE :
Mother’s Day is an important event held especially for mothers. A mother keeps a child in her womb and cares for him/her. She bears the pain when a child is born. She feeds him/her with her milk. She nurtures her child. As the child grows, Mother’s workload increases. She is the first teacher of a child. She teaches truthness, wisdom, moral values and life lessons. Either it is smell or sound, they get their first sense of the outside world from the mother. A child spends most of their time with their mothers. Mothers are the first friend of their child. A child feels much free and comfortable to share things with his/her mother. A mother makes her child brave and courageous with lots of love inside.  Our mother teaches and is the reason, we learn to love. And we feel God’s love more profoundly. She is the first chef for a child. Mother is the ‘HEART’ of a home and a child is the ‘HEART’ of his/her mother. She is the one who inserts confidence in her child. Mothers teach us the power of words. The words that mothers speak have power. Mother’s word can build up a child or shatter him down. It is said that Mothers are the best creation of the world. A myth is also there, that God once thought- ‘ I alone can’t care for all and can’t be present all the times for everyone.’ It was nearly impossible to nourish, nurture, and care for all. So he thought to make Mothers so that she can give everything to her ward. And nourish, nurture and care for them. In Christianity, it is an Eve. And in Hinduism it is Adishakti. A Mother is a great person and does not need anyone like me explaining that.

MOTHER’S DAY :
This day is celebrated to honour motherhood and her sacrifice. On this day, most of the mothers get a day off from their work from their children. Children offer flowers and bouquets to their mother. In Indian Tradition, Childrens take blessings of their mothers. Most of the children gift special items and the mother’s favourites ones to them. Cake cutting is a common event organised on this day. Jewellery, Books, Recipe Books, Gardening equipment, footwear, clothes and house decoration items are gifted. Chocolates and toffees are given to mothers. Most children’s shows their talents and present them to their mothers. Essay writing, Poem writing, Singing, Dancing and dramatics are presented by children. Cooking mother’s favourite dish by the small ones seems lovely. Brunch and dinner parties are organised. Watching a movie at the theatre is also a part of it. Going for a picnic is also common. And the most important one, a handmade gift made by children themselves are truly special. Lastly, a mother’s day card is also special.
Mothers are like gems for their children. I would like to say that respect your mother, try something new for her and try to give the best thing to her. Her level of forgiveness is unmatchable. One who has a mother is fortunate, and one who has an understanding and big-hearted mother is much more fortunate. It is not only Mother’s Day, we should help our mothers but for the whole year, for the whole life. We should be thankful to God for giving us such a wonderful mother and be thankful to mother for giving us everything we needed, for nurturing us. for caring for us and for understanding us in every situation. We must make her smile and make her happy for the whole life.
