The founder of YouTube is 3 ex-employees of PayPal company: Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim, and Steve Chen. It was founded on Valentine’s Day i.e. 14th February 2005 with the domain name “YouTube.com”.
Before working for PayPal, Hurley studied design at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Chen and Karim studied Computer Science from the University of Illionois. There are 2 stories about how they got the idea of making Youtube.
- They wanted to share a video of the birthday party but did not find any medium for sharing it.
- They wanted to see a show by Janet Jackson and Justin Timbler but could not find it on the internet and it was banned on TV.
First, they made an online dating platform named TuneIn which was similar to one other site named HOT OR NOT but it didn’t go successful. Then they worked for YouTube and got success. The reason for the success of their product is it is not a profit-based but problem-solving based product.
According to a survey, 77% of viewers when open YouTube to see 1 video, they watch 7 more and 22% of people watch 14 more videos. This is due to the wonderful search algorithms made by its founders.
The first video of YouTube was uploaded by Jawed Karim by the name ‘Me at The Zoo’ on 23rd April 2005. In November 2005 by SEQUOIA CAPITAL gave funding of Rs. 3.5 million which was used for its stabilization and marketing purpose. By December 2005 it became a corporation with 65 employees most of which were ex-employees of PayPal company. Its first office was in California above a coffee shop. In October 2006, seeing the popularity and demand on YouTube, Google purchased it. The deal was locked at 1.65 billion dollars and now, all 65 employees started working with Google.
In June 2007, YouTube broadcasted their site in 89 different countries. Thus, YouTube came to India in 2007. In March 2010, Google changed the interior of YouTube and made it user friendly. The time limit which was 10 minutes earlier was extended now. Even its video quality was also increased.
Seeing the crowd of users on YouTube, many companies approached it for marketing by which it’s earning started. YouTube started giving money to its YouTubers which encourage them to make them more videos. Thus, as the number of videos being uploaded and seen is increasing, the success of YouTube is also increasing.
