Education is one of the basic needs as well as a human right of nations. So, every country in the world is bounded to protect that right. Many people have lost this right due to poverty. Still, in Sri Lanka there is a free education policy which provides equal education for people in every walks.

In the previous times in Sri Lanka ,poor people faced several problems due to the past education system. Those days only the rich ones had had a proper education and the others, due to poverty, didn’t gain a proper education.

However, in 1945 the education system in Sri Lanka was made formally free as Minister of Education Dr C.W W Kannangara and the committees of education introduced free education to Sri Lanka . The free education scheme does not simply mean that there are no school tuition fees charged but with free education students would be able to fulfill all there dreams .Government provides free of education to children to get good education. They provide free schooling, texts books ,free uniforms ,shoes and all the other facilities to get knowledge . Sri Lanka’s education structure is divided into five parts;

primary, junior, secondary, senior and secondary. Every child from 5-16 aged students must go to school. Primary education is from 5-10 years and then at the end of this time period the students write a national exam. After junior secondary level starts from 11-14 years. After junior, secondary level starts from15.

At 16 years students get ready to GCE ordinary level examination. Then they are qualified to enter the senior secondary education for two years called GCE advanced level. After finishing that two years the students are supposed to sit to the examination so that’s the end of studies .

Today the biggest school in Sri Lanka is also a government school which provides free education.So free education is very useful to poor people as well as rich people and also this free education system changed our country. After starting free education poor kids also showed their skills and best talents. So,today many doctors teachers,engineers are there because of this free education system. Thus,this free education helps all the students to be successful.

This is why, we, Sri Lankans, celebrate Dr.C.W.W.Kannangara as the father of free education and we are eternally grateful for him.

Moreover, the free education of Sri Lanka flipped the Sri Lankan scenario into out of blues.
