Atmospheric city

Hello everyone! My name is Daria. I’m new to this site, but have previously participated in contests from Monomousumi. I am a high school student from Russia.

So, I’ve decided to start a column in which each week I’ll post atmospheric cities to visit from around the world. And I’ll start with my hometown

Taldom

Taldom is a town 90 kilometres north of Moscow. During Tsarist Russian times, this place was a village, but even then it was called one of the “shoe capitals”. Today, the small town is famous for its historical and literary museum, part of which is located on the family estate of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin.

History

The village of Taldom was first mentioned in 1677. In the 18th century, a shoemaking trade appeared in the village, which was practiced by almost all its residents until the end of the 19th century.

In 1901, the Moscow – Savelovo railway went through the village. Thanks to the new transport links, shoe making grew, and soon new workshops, sawmills, and brick factories sprang up. Construction of stone buildings began.

In 1918 Taldom was renamed to Leninsk, then to Sobtsovsk. The historical name returned in 1931. By this time, the shoe-making industry had almost completely disappeared, and the town had become a backwater town near Moscow.

What to see

  • Taldom is famous for its Historical and Literary Museum, which is associated with the names of writers and poets: Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, Sergei Klychkov, Mikhail Prishvin, Sergei Yesenin and others.
  • The architectural pride of the town is the Church of Archangel Michael, built at the turn of the XVIII-XIX centuries
  • Thirty kilometres from Taldom, the old village of Spas-Ugol, the former estate of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, is located.

Let us know what you think of the new column. Continue it or write about something else. In the comments you can also specify the country you want to visit or cities.

Thanks for your attention!

Peace, everyone 🤍💙🤍
