A lady’s Allegiance

She is a lady

She doesn’t drink

Doesn’t smoke

She won’t look you in the eye

She won’t talk back

Her parents are looking for a groom

The wealthiest, richest and fittest

Remember he must be of pure blood

No outcasts allowed

Look how she walks

Every step on the broken glass of her freedom

Her soul seeps away day by day

She is becoming a shell like all the other wives

Look how she talks

What a cultured voice!

Her voice never breaks

Her voice isn’t confident

It is submissive, servile

Dare she ever raise her voice!

She was sixteen when her wings were clipped

She woke up from the dream that was her childhood

Now she only has fading memories because now she can’t go back to that dream anymore

She has to hold up the tradition to marry any man her family decides

It doesn’t matter if he is twice her age

She will be rich and married

She can’t back down

She won’t

Because she knows what happens to the deviants

She is a coward

Look how she cries

In the corner of her room at night

Silent and tragic

But no one will ever take pity

No one will spare a second look

She is a lady after all

And ladies don’t get to choose

They comply

They are shadows

One day she will fly again

She will break the glass ceiling

This time she will fly away

And never look back

One day

She will be a free woman

Who will not be defined by her man

One day
