Ghana, a West African country surrounded by three french speaking countries namely Togo, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast is a country of rich culture and heritage. Ghan which gained independence on the 6th of March 1957 is still a developing country despite all the resources the country has. Ghana is well known in the world for its rich culture, kind hospitality, football legends such as Abedi Pele, Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan and many other things. One of the things that portray Ghana’s good name overseas is its magnificent tourist sites.
Paris will boast about the Eiffel tower, Rome will boast about The Colosseum, The Big Apple will boast about the statue of liberty, Dubai will boast about Burj Khalifa, Peru will boast about Machu Picchu, India will boast about the Taj Mahal, Egypt will boast about the pyramids of Giza, China’s great wall is a wonder of man but Ghana has what it has and the tourist sites in Ghana make us black and proud.
Ghana has a series of tourist sites that will take centuries to name. Below are six tourist sites in Ghana which are compared to none in the world. These six tourist sites are sites with information to marvel people.
The first and foremost tourist site to be noted is Cape Three Points. Cape Three Points is a small peninsula in the western region of Ghana on the Atlantic Ocean. Forming the southernmost tip of Ghana, Cape Three Points is located between the coastal village of Dixcove and Princess town. Cape three points are known as ‘the land nearest nowhere because it is the land nearest a location in the sea which is at 0 altitudes, 0 longitude and 0 latitudes. Awesome right. Cape three Point is also known for its lighthouses. A lighthouse was built in 1875 by the British but got destroyed.
A well-improved lighthouse was built in 1925 and is still functioning today. The lighthouse was solar-powered in 2005. This lighthouse is a fantastic place to admire the landscape and even catch a glimpse of whales between August and February and dolphins between July and November. the whales and the dolphins use this sea route during their migration. You can view the nocturnal nesting of the endangered sea turtles. Their peak season is from October to December each year although they may arrive anytime between August and March. Anytime you are in the western region of Ghana, visit Cape Three Points and you will be glad you did.
Another important tourist site in Ghana is Lake Volta. Lake Volta is the largest man-made lake in the world. It has a surface area of 8502 square kilometres. The Akosombo Dam which generates electricity for Ghana and some of its neighbouring countries is also mounted on it. The lake is formed by the Akosombo Dam which began in 1961 and was completed in 1965, dammed the Volta river just south of Ajena and created a lake extending upstream from Akosombo to Yapei. Lake Volta, the reservoir impounded by Akosombo Dam produces about 1040 megawatts of hydroelectric power. The lake also provides inland transportation and is a vulnerable resource for irrigation and inland fisheries. The Adomi Bridge( Ghana’s longest bridge) is also mounted on it. Lake Volta is a lake compared to none.
To the northern side of the country is another important tourist site known as the Paga crocodile pond. The pond which is situated at Paga in the Upper East Region of the country is inhabited by friendly crocodiles. The friendliness of the crocodile has made the pond popular. Tourists could even sit on the crocodile without getting a scratch. Legends say that about 600 years ago a crocodile carried a dying man to cross the pond. The man declared the crocodiles sacred. Another man lived near the pond with his wife and three children. One day, the man killed a crocodile and one of his children died. Another day he killed another crocodile and another child died. He killed the third crocodile and his third child died. He went to a fetish priest to get information about the death of his children. The fetish priest attributed the death of his children to the killing of the crocodiles. It was indeed pathetic. From that day to date, no one has ever killed a crocodile in the Paga crocodile pond and the crocodiles have also remained friendly.
In Larabanga is a mosque named the Larabanga mosque. in the Savannah region of Ghana. Its dimensions are 8m by 8m. It is the oldest mosque in West Africa. It is known as “the Mecca Of West Africa”. It was founded in 1421. It is believed that the mosque was built by an Islamic trader called Ayuba who received the revelation in his dream when he slept in that area. The next day when he woke up, he saw that the foundation of the mosque has mysteriously been laid so he continued to build it.
Near the coast on the far western side of Ghana, near the border with the Ivory Coast is a village that is unique in all of Ghana. This wonderful village is known as Nzulezu. Nzulezu is a ‘Nzema’ word meaning ‘surface of the water. Nzulezu is a village located in the western region of Ghana and is 90 kilometres west of Takoradi. The village is built on stilts on lake Tadano. This island village is a wonder. Nzulezu is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The Nzulezu stilt village is not connected to electricity but there are television poles attached to almost every home in the village which are powered by car batteries. Even though it is a small community, it has a school, market and health centre.
To sum up, a very interesting tourist site you would not like to miss if you are in Ghana is Amedzofe. Amedzofe is a town located in the Ho West Municipality of Ghana. Amedzofe is the highest human settlement in Ghana. It is a town built on a mountain. How buildings were even built in this town is a wonder. Except for the magnificent buildings Amedzofe has several great features that make it stand tall among tourist sites in the world. TV transmission poles are mounted on Amedzofe because of their height. There is a canopy walk and a waterfall in the town. There are ancient chairs in the main market constructed of stone slabs. Amedzofe has a Senior High School, technical, vocational and college of education. Amedzofe has everything a human needs for relaxation and amusement. From hotels, motels, nightclubs, and football academies among others.
Singing and dancing groups are always visible in the town’s market. Amedzofe is well known for its mountain called mount Gemi. The town itself is situated on a mountain and we have a mountain on a mountain. A 4-meter tall cross is mounted on the mountain. Climbing the mountain will take you roughly 45 minutes if you are physically well. From the top of the mountain, you can see a lot of towns and the road. You can vividly see the Volta Lake Also from the top of the mountain. Amedzofe is a town that shows the greatness and uniqueness of God.
